Esther is 18 at the outbreak of war. She is a Jewish girl who has reached England via the Kinder Transport. George is 17 at the outbreak and a veteran of street fighting against the fascist Blackshirts in London's East End. Despite being granted British citizenship, Esther is interned on the Isle of Man while George is called up after some frightening civil defence work in the Blitz. Released from internment, Esther finds work as an ambulance driver during the V rocket attacks of 1944 while George fights first during the invasion of Sicily and later in Eastern France with the Special Operations Executive. For years they hardly see one another and each begins to question their future. Despite both young people face unimaginable horrors, they try to re-establish the love they had for each other six years previously.
