Max is a young man living on planet Grailliyn. He is embarking on his solo exploration journey, a coming-of-age rite of passage for his people. His journey takes him into frozen, snow-covered terrain, where he drives a sled team of the planet's crab-like creatures. His route takes him in the footsteps of his parents, who mysteriously disappeared on the same journey. Before reaching his destination, Max discovers a strange, anachronistic object underneath the ice. It's a pod, still functioning, containing a young woman who speaks his language, but with a strange accent. The woman has amnesia, so Max gives her the name of Snow, based on his recollection of fairy tales. Together, the two make some startling discoveries about the colony's past. The truth, if it gets out, could threaten the planet's entire human population. Max and Snow embark on a fast-paced adventure to locate a hidden ancient starship, which they will use to escape the planet. They are racing against time, being pursued by adversaries who will stop at nothing to keep the colony's origins a secret.
